Biography of William S. Jackson, Senior

William Sharpless Jackson, Sr. was born near Kennett Square, Chester County, Pennsylvania, January 16, 1836, son of Caleb S. Jackson, a Pennsylvania farmer, and Mary Ann Gause. Josiah and Mary (Sharpless) Jackson were the grandparents of William S. Jackson, Sr. William S. Jackson, Sr. received his education at the Greenwood Dell and Eaton academies in Chester county. He served an apprenticeship at the machinist's trade in Wilmington, Delaware, later becoming confidential clerk for the firm with whom he learned his trade. For six years he engaged in the car building and lumber trade at Latrobe, Pa., after which he accepted the post of local treasurer of the Lake Superior & Mississippi Railroad Co. at Duluth, Minn. He held the latter position for one year.

Jackson became secretary and treasurer of the Denver & Rio Grande Railway Co., organized in 1870 under the leadership of General William Jackson Palmer, who was its first president. Shortly thereafter he moved to Colorado Springs, where he took part in the founding of that city, being one of the officers of the two original townsite companies. He and his sister Margaret (an Oberlin graduate) were on the first train to reach Colorado Springs from Denver over the newly constructed Denver & Rio Grande Railway. The executive offices of the Denver & Rio Grande were for a while located at Colorado Springs. He later became executive vice-president of the road. In 1876 he resigned from all official connections with the company.

Meanwhile, in 1873, W.S. Jackson, Sr. had turned his attention to banking. In partnership with three others, Jackson founded the El Paso County Bank in Colorado Springs, a private bank. By the time he resigned from the railway company he had bought out one of the partners and acquired a majority interest in the remaining partnership. He remained the head of the bank until the end of the century, when it was reorganized as a national bank known as the El Paso National Bank. At that time he sold the control but remained as president until his retirement from all active business in 1911 at the age of 75. In 1884, he participated in the founding of the Denver National Bank. As one of the original directors, he served continuously until his resignation in 1911. He was also one of the founders and original directors of the International Trust Company of Denver in 1891.

Jackson resumed his earlier activities in the railroad field when on July 12, 1884, the United States District Court of Colorado appointed him receiver of the Denver & Rio Grande Railway Company at the request of a majority of the bond holders. He served as such for two years. He then became president of the new company resulting from the reorganization. He resigned as both president and director in May 1887.

He was a co-trustee of the Mexican National Railway at the time of its construction. He also was trustee of the Silverton Railroad, one of the railroads promoted by Otto Mears in San Juan County in southwestern Colorado.

Jackson was interested in a number of mining enterprises in the Rocky Mountain area and was president of the Elkton Mining Company at the time when it was one of the large producing gold mines of the Cripple Creek District. He was one of the organizers and officers of the El Paso Electric Company, the original company to supply electricity to Colorado Springs. At one time he was part owner of the Colorado Springs Gazette, the earliest newspaper in Colorado Springs. He was a member of the first school board in Colorado Springs, organized in 1872, and served as its first treasurer. In 1874, the year his term on the school board expired, he became one of the incorporators and trustees of Colorado College. He served continuously on the board until 1917, except during the years 1880 to 1888.

In politics Jackson was a Republican, and in 1879, with the support of various counties of the state, his name was before the state legislature as a candidate for United States Senator. However, Senator Nathaniel P. Hill, of Denver, was finally elected. In religion his affiliation was with the Society of Friends. Colorado College conferred upon him the honorary degree of LL.D. in 1910.

He was married twice. In Wolfeboro, N. H., October 28, 1875, he married Helen Fiske, daughter of Prof. Nathan W. Fiske of Amherst College, Massachusetts. She was the widow of Major Edward B. Hunt of the U.S. Army and as an author has since became known as H.H. and Helen Hunt Jackson. She died in 1885.

In Poughkeepsie, N. Y., March 1, 1888, Jackson married Helen Fiske Banfield, daughter of Everett Colby Banfield and Anne Fiske Banfield and niece of Helen Hunt Jackson. Helen Banfield's mother, Anne Fiske Banfield, was a sister of the first Mrs. Jackson. By this marriage Jackson had seven children: William Sharpless, Helen, Everett Banfield, Roland (who was killed in action in France June 6, 1918 while serving as 2nd Lieut., Co. G, 30th U.S. Infantry and whose biography appears in the Memoirs of the Harvard War Dead), Dr. Edith Banfield, Gardner, and Margaret Beverly. He was an uncle to Dugald C. Jackson, William B. Jackson, and Paul D. Cravath. Helen Banfield Jackson died in Oct. 1899. William S. Jackson Sr. died in Colorado Springs, Colorado, June 4, 1919.

BIOGRAPHY OF HELEN BANFIELD JACKSON

Helen Fiske Banfield (later Helen Banfield Jackson) was born May 23, 1859. She was the daughter of Everett C. Banfield and Anne S. Fiske, the only sister of Helen Hunt Jackson. Helen Banfield graduated from Vassar College in 1879 where she had formed several friendships whom she corresponded with until her sudden death in 1899. In 1885, when Helen Hunt Jackson died, Helen Banfield inherited her aunt's estate. Three years later she married her beloved uncle, William S. Jackson, Sr.

From 1876 to 1899 she kept a daily diary. She also wrote regular letters to her mother, father, and sisters Edith Colby Banfield, "Kitty", Anne Fiske Banfield (Davenport), "Nannie", and Mary Chapman Banfield (Avery), "Mammie." The collection also contains a few letters from her brothers, Richard and Nathan.

In 1896, she sent her two daughters Edith (age 11 months) and Helen (age 6 years) to a day school for girls at 210 North Cascade Avenue, just around the corner from their home at 228 East Kiowa. The day school was headed by Misses Loomis and Bainbridge, both graduates of Vassar College. The boys attended Cutler Academy and later, Colorado College.

The Jackson family always had the services of a cook and a family seamstress. They took frequent trips by rail back East to visit their relatives and occasionally relatives would venture out West.

Helen Banfield Jackson was deeply saddened by the death of her nine month old baby, Margaret, in December of 1898. She spent the summer of 1899 with her family in Newport, Rhode Island attempting to recover from her lingering depression. On October 19, 1899, she shot herself and died. (See Facts, Vol. V., No. 3, Oct. 21, 1899, p. 16)

After Helen's death, her sister Edith Banfield moved out to Colorado Springs to help raise the six Jackson children ranging from two to ten years old. In March of 1903, Edith Banfield died after an operation to remove a tumor from her neck. In the fall of 1903 Dora Jones ("Aunt Dora") became a part of the Jackson household.
